Adelia & NormaLee

Adelia’s life was simply chaos. She did a lot of dope, but the real problems didn’t begin until June 2005 when her mother died after a long illness. Everything that she was doing right, she stopped doing. She quit her job, she quit paying bills. She was left with no job and no place to live.

Eventually she and her daughter, NormaLee, resorted to living in her car in a hospital parking lot. She didn’t get much sleep with a 2-year-old constantly saying, “I want potty,” and she couldn’t feed her daughter instant noodles and cold chicken all the time. She was about a half step ahead of Child Protective Services.

One day, Adelia was experiencing what seemed to be one of her worst days. She picked up the phone to make a call and dialed it incorrectly. Amazingly, her wrong number connected her to the Orange County Rescue Mission’s House of Hope women’s shelter. Before long, we made a place for Adelia and NormaLee.

Today, they are getting their lives back on track. Adelia realizes that she was cheating NormaLee out of her mom and now she thanks God that she has come out of it without mental scars. “She’s been through so much,” she says.

Now, Adelia looks forward to every day. “I know life’s not about money or things. I had things. It’s about who you are,” she says.

“I never accepted myself and always tried to be someone I wasn’t,” she continues. “Now I am happy with who I am.”

Your generosity and one wrong number made all the difference for a mother and daughter running out of hope. Thanks to your support of the Orange County Rescue Mission, Adelia and NormaLee are on the road to a new life.

The above story is yet another real example of a real life that has been filled with HOPE by a combination of compassionate giving, hands-on ministry and the grace of God. Thank you for your role in bringing it to pass.
