“The first Tito Trujillo story chronicles God's faithfulness to deliver him from the snares of drug addiction and gang affiliation (along with the inevitable incarcerations), lead him into a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, connect him with Christian mentors at church and with the Orange County Rescue Mission, reunite him with his son, and establish him with a steady job and stable living environment. What wasn't included in that first article was the story within a story — a romance, really — that showcases God's interest in addressing ALL of Tito's needs.

On Friday nights at Unidos, a three-month drug rehab program Tito completed in 2003, you either attended the Bible study or turned the TV off and went to your room. On one of these Friday nights, Tito decided to “just waste some time” at the Bible study rather than the alternative. One of the men from a local church who came to share the Gospel with the program participants asked, “Do you guys have Bibles?” He then took a Bible, opened it, and slid it (with purpose) straight across the table to Tito. When it came to rest directly in front of him, he could only stare in bewilderment as he read the bold letters on the page. The Spanish title read, “TITO.”

Now, that's pretty amazing. A complete stranger who doesn't know you from Adam walks in, randomly opens a Bible to a page with your name for its title, and out of all the people in the room, shoves it in front of your face. Tito thought it was pretty amazing, too. God had gotten his attention. “I took that as a calling,” he says. Tito then sought out the man (Henry) at the local church and a mentoring relationship developed. It wasn't long before Tito accepted Jesus as his Lord and began a new life of purpose. But, as it is for all of us, God had more in store for him.

As Tito began to regularly attend Henry's church, a certain young lady caught his eye and a relationship began to grow. One day, a friend came to him and said, “Hey, what's up with you and Henry's daughter?” It was time for Tito to be amazed again. The certain young lady (Amanda) just happened to be the daughter of the Complete Stranger.

Over a period of about two years, Tito and Amanda came to believe that God had brought them together to be husband and wife. On April 21, 2007, Tito's 32nd birthday, he got the best present ever when he exchanged wedding vows with Amanda. And, of course, that made the Complete Stranger his father-in-law!

Tito and Amanda now share the parenting responsibilities over Tito's son, Brian, now three. They have a desire to expand their family and have more children. Amanda, who aspires to become a beautician, can't wait to have a daughter to practice on. The Lord has provided abundantly for them with a very nice Laguna Niguel condominium, although they want to move closer to their church so they can be more involved in outreach. Tito works as a mechanic and is seeking God for his future career direction.

Tito and Amanda have all the earmarks of a “successful” family. They are both well connected with family and church fellowship, have gainful employment, are responsible parents and, most of all, realize that God is their ultimate source.

*** This just in, June 19, 2007: Amanda is pregnant! ***

Mrs. Balderas needs to take blood pressure medication daily, but she can’t afford it. After two months without her medicine, she was feeling very ill. When she came to us, her blood pressure was dangerously high and her blood sugar levels were off. She was in bad shape. Thanks to you, we were able to supply her medication and eligibility scanning for insurance.

We see it regularly: the working poor who come through our doors suffer tremendously from lack of medical care. Without their prescribed medications, their health declines, they miss work, lose their jobs and quickly slide into trouble. The need is so great. Your gifts to keep our Mobile Medical Clinic (above) running to provide critical help for people with nowhere else to turn. Thanks to your gifts, Mrs. Balderas won’t have to choose between buying food for the children or filling her prescription.

A fter nine years in prison, Glen gave up drugs completely. He was sober for two years, which he claims “were the best two years of my life.” But after drinking one cold beer after work, he became an alcoholic — just like his father, and three of his four brothers. Within four weeks he had a DUI; within nine months he was back in prison. After prison, he collapsed three times in one month from the abuse he was giving his body. He was so far down he began thinking life wasn’t worth living. Then he found the Mission, hope, and a new life. Thank you!

A naheim native Talia Scott was rebellious at a very young age. She started taking drugs at age 11. Her parents tried everything, but she bounced from relatives to Juvenile Hall to the streets. She finally landed in a gang: Down Familia of Wicked Soldiers (DFWS). At first she loved the wild, violent life. By age 26, though, she was getting tired. Tired of going to jail, not having what she wanted, sleeping in her car, having to leave her young daughters with friends. She just wanted a normal life. Then her uncle, who was also her best friend, decided to give up gang life. Just two days later, he was murdered.

Talia recognized the harsh wake-up call for what it was. She turned herself in, did her time and started looking for a program to help her get her life back on track. The same stubborn attitude that put her on the streets is now being put to good use at the House of Hope — learning parenting skills, studying the Bible, planning a career, staying sober. She is very proud of her 88 days of sobriety and the tremendous improvement in her relationship with her daughters. They are all young enough to begin brand new lives!

Jack’s dad was vice president of the Railroad Co. That meant Jack got to travel across the country! But it also meant that his dad was away from home a lot — missing most birthdays and important sporting events of his life. Jack didn’t feel he had a place to turn when he had problems. Now he realizes he used drugs and alcohol to fill a void in his life. After a four-year downward spiral of drug use, he was homeless and living in an abandoned house with no heat — in the dead of an Indiana winter.

“My life has changed 1000% at the Mission,” he beams. “The best feeling in my entire life has been serving people here in the kitchen. They know I care.”

Community groups, churches, families, individuals, and businesses — here’s a great way to help homeless families stay together while they rebuild their lives and become self-supporting:

Adopt a family suite or a room at the Village of Hope! The Village of Hope is an innovative, faith-based, transitional facility that will keep homeless dads, moms, and kids together, while giving parents 12 to 24 months to work on job training and life skills. To make this dream a reality, we must complete the transformation of two existing military dormitories into 128 rooms for homeless families. A plaque with your name, or your group’s name, will be placed in the room. More importantly, your group will be part of creating modern-day miracles in the lives of hurting families in Orange County.

Please e-mail Joe Wheeler or call (714) 247-4325 for more info. You can also check our Web site for volunteer work dates, construction needs, prayer requests and more.

You are my hero! You save lives. I’m constantly humbled and inspired by your compassion and generosity.

You give sacrificially.
And for most of you, it isn’t out of wealth that you give. You are from all income levels. Many of you have been helped by the Mission and are giving back. But not only do you give to purchase meals and shelter — you are putting your faith into action.

You volunteer.
You serve meals, conduct food drives, tutor, fill hygiene kits, deliver Christmas to motel families, throw fundraisers, decorate Village of Hope rooms — I can’t even list it all!

You pray.
When I talk to men and women who have spent years on the streets and are now taking this opportunity to get back on their feet, they almost always refer to the fact that they know people love them, care for them and are praying for them. You are the ones who are doing that. Have you written a word of encouragement on an Easter or holiday dinner mat and returned it? A hungry person saw that. Have you delivered a Christmas tree to a homeless family? That was more than a gift; you were delivering God’s love.

Any meal we hand out comes with love and compassion from someone just like you. And it’s working. God is using all you do, all we do, to touch and change lives. You are my idea of a superhero! Thank you.

In His service,

The vision of the Change-A-Life Foundation is to change one life at a time through designated giving. Their $7,500 award for glucose test strips will do just that for 317 of our diabetic patients. Since more than 50% of our OCRM Healthcare Services patients suffer from diabetes and most don’t have enough money to buy their own prescriptions, these small test strips will make a big difference in how patients stabilize their blood sugar levels.

Thank you, Change-A-Life!

Have you ever seen a homeless person standing on the street corner with a sign saying “Will work for food?” What should you do? Should you give them money? Should you buy them food? These options provide only temporary relief, but at the Orange County Rescue Mission, we want to suggest a way that you can make a permanent difference in homeless people's lives:
